A Child’s-Eye View Of Courage, Danger, And Doing What’s Right

Set in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, this true story follows Theodore McAllister, “just a kid,” as he helps his abolitionist father with the Underground Railroad during the years when helping freedom seekers could lead to prison. Theodore leads frightened travelers through dark woods, listens for hounds and bounty hunters, and guides them into Rock Creek to wash away their scent before bringing them to the family mill to hide and rest. Later, when a runaway boy is chased toward the mill with hunters close behind, Theodore’s family hides him in a cave on Wolf Hill, and Theodore returns quietly with food and water while the search continues. Through every close call, the story holds onto a simple lesson Theodore learned at home: treat others the way you want to be treated

because actions speak louder than words.
